Beer Tasting!

Mr. K’s visit was quite short (its hard to believe its already passed), but it was so wonderful to see him.  We started Saturday off at what I have now dubbed ‘our’ brunch place: Zachary’s

I had the basic eggs with over medium eggs, oatmeal molasses bread, half order of breakfast potato and half order of fruit.

It was delish.  And a perfect way to start off the day.  The breakfast potatoes are seriously the best.potatoes.ever.  No joke.  And – they’re vegan.

We continued our rainy days at the movies, where we saw Paul, which I really enjoyed and thought was quite hilarious.  I would recommend it – it’s a fun movie.  Definitely a children’s story/movie turned into an adult feature film.  But I will warn you: if you don’t like profanity, steer clear.  I’m pretty sure the f-bomb was dropped every other second.  But the profanity didn’t bother me, and I kind of thought it enhanced the movie and made it that much more entertaining.

After Paul, Mr. K and I walked around town, before embarking on our beer tasting afternoon.

When I was in Denver over Christmas break for the AEA conference, I went to a lot of breweries and came back to Santa Cruz with a ton of beer.

First, we tasted New Belgium Frambozen.

P1110579

It was a raspberry brown ale.  It had some good flavors, but brown ales aren’t my favorite drinks.  I enjoyed the raspberry taste on the front end, but I didn’t enjoy the brown ale taste that remained.  I was satisfied with half a pour, and didn’t really want any more.

The second beer we tried was the Breckenridge Oatmeal Stout.

P1110584   P1110585   P1110587

The oatmeal stout had a rich, chocolaty oatmeal taste.  I really liked it, and enjoyed the complex palate it had.  However, I can’t drink very much of any stout.  They’re good – but I think they’re too rich for me.

After two samples of beer, Mr. K can no longer make a straight face Winking smile

Third beer we tried was Pliny the Elder by Russian River Brewing.

P1110596

Pliny is an IPA.  And OMGGGG.  If you don’t know already, IPAs are my favorite.  And my favorite beer by far is Bell’s Two Hearted.  That being said, Two Hearted better watch out…  Pliny the Elder may be giving it a run for its money.  And the fact that I can get Pliny the Elder here in California (its brewed in Sonoma County), means that it will probably be appearing a lot in my beer drinking habits over the next few years.  If you can’t tell, my review (as an IPA lover) is that I loved the hops, the mixture of flavors and the all around quality of the beer.  Two thumbs up!

Last up was Avery’s Maharaja.

P1110632

This was an imperial IPA, and it was definitely another good one.  I had had it off the tap while we were in Denver at the Avery Brewery – and it was phenomenal, so I knew I had to get one for Mr. K to be able to try.  And the verdict?  Delicious!  It was a solid IPA, with tons of flavor, hops (I love hops!) and there was plenty of it.  I was a happy girl Smile

The final rankings?
1. Pliny the Elder
2. Maharaja
3. Oatmeal Stout
4. Frambozen

I’m not quite sure of Mr. K’s rankings, but I think it was similar to mine (I’d have to ask him again, though to be sure!).  It was a great way to spend the afternoon, just hanging out and relaxing.  Its not very often we get to hang out in the same place together, so I like to take advantage of every moment.

After the beer tasting, we cooked an amazing dinner…stay tuned Smile

What is your favorite kind of beer?  Favorite brewery & beer?  Like I said earlier, I love Bell’s Two Hearted, but I’m just an all around IPA girl.  I used to only drink wheat beers, but then Mr. K introduced me to IPAs, and I have never really looked back.  Thanks, Mr. K for enlightening my beer palate!

Red Rocks

Yesterday morning, Kat & I were going to go workout, before realizing that the keys were locked in the car.  Though I was bummed I wasn’t going to get my workout on, it ended up being good in the long run.

I met up with my cousin Laura, who recently moved to Denver, and we went out for a nice light lunch before we decided we needed to enjoy the gorgeous 54 degree weather Denver had yesterday.

We decided to check out Red Rocks trails & amphitheater as neither of us had ever been there before with her dog, Cody.  And, as soon as we got there, I knew it was an excellent way to spend the afternoon.

We walked along the 1.4 mile trading post trail.

And experienced lots of wind…

And then we made the climb up to the amphitheater.  I would LOVE to attend a concert here.  (Apparently they do boot camp workouts too…on the stairs.  NO THANK YOU!)

Afterward, I was exhausted (elevation takes it out of you), and was really happy I hadn’t worked out that morning or I wouldn’t have made it ;)  Red Rocks was beautiful, and I would love to go back someday to check out the other trails they have (the have another 6.8 mile loop – but it was just too far to go for an afternoon hike).

Have you been hiking in Denver/Boulder area?!  Where are you favorite spots?  I’m planning on coming back to the area of the summer, and would love some recommendations!

Now its ECONOMICON (aka American Economic Association conference) time in Denver!  Quite excited to go be a super econ nerd for a few days 😉

A Foodzie Tasting Box

Just in time for Black Friday, I was given the opportunity to host a give-away for two readers and also receive a  complementary delectable Tasting Box from Foodzie for myself.

After a bit of finagling the details with Foodzie, I finally received my December tasting box in Minnesota on December 26th…the night my stomach flu hit.  But since I was super excited about the Foodzie Tasting Box, and the awesome items held within (though I admit, I couldn’t really eat most of it myself – Mr. K definitely benefited from this one).

It arrived nicely packaged in the box.

001 002

Seriously, props for packaging!

And it contained the following:

042 043

A Square One Brownie & Effie’s Oatcakes.

045 046

Amella Cocoa Butter Caramels Passion Fruit & Madecasse Chocolate

047 048

Gary West Steak Strips & Salts from the Spice Lab.

Seriously, the salts are probably my favorite part.  Lava salt?!  Himalayan Salt?!  Yes, Please!

050 051

I’m excited to use the fancy salt packets I got in the weeks to come (especially during my bean-a-thon — which, stay tuned as it will begin mid-January as I’m finalizing the recipe list as we speak!), but the rest of it I gave to Mr. K.

*Updated: I just got his full reviews this morning!*

Mr. K’s review of his portion of the tasting box:

The Square One brownie was “too dry, but tasted really rich and good. I would eat it again over other packaged brownies.” (I think the box took a lot longer to find me during the holidays, and then a few more days before I regifted the foods to Mr. K).  And the Madecasse chocolates? “A nice chocolate. Nothing spectacular, but good.”  And once I told him the story of the chocolates (I learned about them at Food Buzz Festival), and the fact that they are entirely produced in Madagascar, he liked them a little bit more, I think 😉

How about the Gary West Steak Strip?  It was “Delicious! I usually don’t like beef jerky, too salty and almost like chewing gum but this was really good. a bit smoky, a bit sweet, quite good! I would eat it again.”   Effie’s Homemade Oatcakes also made the cut! They were “really good!  They are nice and crunchy/crumbly, the thickness was nice in the mouth (pretty thin, flat rectangles) with good grain flavors that had some of the sweetness of oats, and they had a perfect dusting of salt to give just a bit of saltiness.”  Last but not least, Mr. K tried the Annella passionfruit cocoa butter caramels.  He declared they were “soft and chewy with good caramel and chocolate flavors.  It had a nice hint of passion fruit (not my favorite flavor at all) which would be really good to me in others.”

Thanks Mr. K for your fabulous reviews!  I couldn’t have done it better myself 😉

So, with that update, I’d say the Tasting Box is getting a rave review – and for $19.99 a box, I might have to give a few for a gift next Christmas (you know, planning just a little ahead for the holidays ;))  If you are thinking about trying one out, go on over to Foodzie and check it, and their other great offerings, out!

How is your new year starting out?! I’m starting mine out in Denver for a conference and then its back the books.  I’m also working on filling in my Raceolution calendar with races and finalizing the Bean-a-thon recipe and posting date list!  I am so excited for this year already, and its barely started 🙂
