Thank you all for your great comments on how you have found balance in your life, and how you prioritize. Its great to get other people’s input on it – sometimes I just spin ideas through my head, and can’t figure out what has to go. For now, its part of my social life and gourmet cooking. C’est la vie.
But in more exciting news, this morning I got an email from my PhD friend Eva asking me if I wanted to go for a bike. I immediately jumped at the chance, before knowing what I was getting myself into.
The furthest I’ve ever biked was 24.8 miles for my first triathlon in August, and I haven’t really had too much desire to go any further. The 24.8 miles hurt my lady bits and butt enough, and I wasn’t craving more discomfort. But, we set off and Eva goes “so I have this loop in mind. It will take a few hours, with a few big hills.”
Not one to back down from a challenging work out, I agreed. What I didn’t know, is that I agreed to this:
Please note: the first 10 miles are basically ALL.UP.HILL. And then once you get past that and the huge downhill there are rolling hills, but the incline in the first 10 MILES is so huge, that you don’t really see any of that.
While it was a beautiful ride through the gorgeous redhills here in Santa Cruz, and then back along the coast, my butt kills.
Can’t complain those, because I rocked those 30 miles in just over 2 hours. And that was with me taking it extremely safe on the steep down hills on which you can get going pretty fast. I took it safe because of a cycling accident my cousin had three years ago that left her in pretty bad shape, and the scary wake up call of Ashley’s accident quite recently. I figure a little more time on the bike (and pain in the butt) is worth it to try to avoid similar situations.
All in all, it was a great way to start the day. And reminded me of how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful place.
Well, I’m off to do some homework, hit up a housewarming/birthday party and hit up a party at one of my PhD friends’ places! Catch you later (hopefully with my MARATHON recap…for which I have some exciting news!)
How are you enjoying this ‘holiday’ weekend? We don’t get Monday off (hence the quotes), but I’m still trying to enjoy it!
