I realized last night at dinner, that it had been 2+ days since I had had meat.  I’m not quite sure why, but I just haven’t been craving meat.  I decided to continue this trend (consciously this time) and avoid eating meat for lunch.  Since I’m not eating meat right now, this in effect means I’m eating vegan because I don’t consume dairy.  Except goat cheese.  Which, I guess then means I’m not eating vegan, but rather vegetarian.  Right?  So confusing.

Lunch.   I headed over to Treasure Island grocery, and found myself a delightful main entree.

I got Amy’s vegan Shepherd’s Pie.  It was supposed to look like this

So nice and pretty.

Instead it looked like this…

Not so pretty.  Or appetizing.  Fortunately, it tasted much, much better than it looked.  And hit the spot.

I complimented this with some of this

Vegetables from the farmers market + TJ’s tomato basil hummus!  Delish.

If you’re wondering what the white vegetable is, it is kohlrabi.  Kohlrabi “is a low, stout cultivar of the cabbage that will grow almost anywhere. It has been selected for its swollen, nearly spherical shape” (source: wikepedia).  It is commonly eaten in Kashmir, and looks like this before it is cut.

It doesn’t have much of a taste, but is very crunchy, and water saturated.

If you can find some at your local farmer’s market, I definitely recommend trying kohlorabi!

Dessert was a nectarine.

For a mid-morning snack, I had an orange.  And this afternoon I munched on some popcorn from Treasure Island.  Mmm.  Popcorn.  Twas as good as it sounds.

So, any thoughts/tips on going vegan/vegetarian?  What about nixing all meat (in addition to the dairy) — except for eggs and goat cheese? I’m not sure if I want to do it, but I’ve been thinking about it. Much cheaper and it can be healthier — and I will soon be a grad student on a budget.
